Getting to the Hostel
We are located right on the water on the neighboring island of Carenero, only three minutes by boat from Bocas Town so you can shop and party all you want – yet still far enough from the action to enjoy the tranquility and tropical beauty of the Bocas del Toro archipelago. After landing on Isla Colón, simply take a water taxi to Gran Kahuna on Carenero Island. We’ll cover the cost of transport (usually $1) so you can check-in at your leisure.
Carenero Island is small but has lots to do. Soon you will be able to rent Stand Up Paddle Boards and explore the colorful beautiful surrounding reef. Because the island is such an accessible size, you can walk along sandy paths and witness the diverse wildlife, then paddle around the entire island—all before lunch! The surf is only a few minutes’ walk away and there are several spots that you can enjoy.
Gran Kahuna Beach Hostel is a one-floor Caribbean/open-air style hostel featuring shared and private dorms. The hostel is only a few steps from the beach and has its own sundeck with a dock for taxi pick ups/drop offs. With plenty of hammocks and sofas, a place to chill can always be found.
If you are new to surfing then Gran Kahuna Bocas is a great choice because beginner waves are only a few minutes’ walk from our front door. For more experienced surfers, water taxis provide easy access to more challenging waves on all the islands.
